After looking into the Trojan history and any established cartoons based on them or that era I discovered that the story of the trojan war was well documented by many greek artists. This has been turned into a modern day comic by marvel and will be a good source of information regarding costume and manorisms.

These cartoons of the trojan army will give me the references for creating the weapons and armor that my character will have. In my head he will be a skinny little man in armor that is slightly too big for him. Lovable but stupid. Im thinking about the possibilities of incorperating his horse even more stupid or perhaps the reverse, being more intelligent and helping our hapless hero. A similar relationship -if I remember- to Hercules and his horse pegasus.

Week One

I must say that I am quite excited about this brief, it looks to allow for the most creativity of all the briefs so far and I am looking forward to getting stuck in.

Initially as the brief was read out I jumped ten steps ahead thinking of all the different shenanigans in which I could animate my character in. In doing this I completely overlooked the main question of who he/she should actually be. My first thought went to the Scottish Highlanders that I'm currently reading about in a novel but alas they are far too modern to be considered an ancient civilization. From this point I hopped between different civilizations disappointing myself with my own lack of historical knowledge. During this time I considered The Mongels (Genghis Khan) and the The Native Americans, I was sure that they at least dated back to around Christ but it appears that they came about - In the way that they are most commonly remembered - in the late 1200s. After this I went on to more mainstream civilizations such as the Egyptians, The Aztecs and The Romans but decided against these wanting something more original.

Going back through Roman history, I was reminded that it is supposed that it was the Trojans who founded Rome whilst running away from the fierce Spartans. This with a cartoon twist gave me many ideas of a haphazard clumsy soldier and his goofy horse. I will research further into this idea and post my results next week.
